And the New Year Begins

It doesn't really feel like the New Year to me until the kids go back to school. And tomorrow is finally that day!! Actually we have had a wonderful month off together. Orlando, Disney World, Cousin Sue, Christmas x3, New Years, and a wonderful extra week off - it's been great. But all good things must come to an end, and it seems I'm the only one who isn't crying! Literally.

Christmas was lovely and peaceful and nice. Everyone did with less and no one seemed to mind.
We also did a lot of visiting. On Christmas day, Frank and I went to visit his cousin Ron who had been in the hospital for a couple weeks. The Monday after Christmas we drove up to visit with Frank's cousin Sherrie (Ron's sister) and her husband Ken. They weren't able to join us for Christmas as Sherrie's breathing has become more difficult and is now on oxygen. It was good to visit with them. Please continue to pray for her and her family. Then, Dad, Beth, Haley and I drove down to Visalia on Tuesday after Christmas and visited with my Great Uncle Dave. He is in an assisted living apartment and treated us to a very nice lunch in the dining room. It was fun to go with Dad and Beth. We visited with Frank's Aunt Laura and Uncle Bill (Sherrie's Mother and Dad) that evening and then drove over to visit with his Aunt Faith and Aunt Esther. On the way, Dad and Beth called us and told us that the fog was so bad that we should stay the night with them. So, after our visit with Faith and Esther we went over and let them take care of us!
On New Years Eve we - the 15th anniversary of when I first met Frank, and by the way the 15th anniversary of when I knew I had met the man I was going to marry!- went to the church's party. We've never been and we really had a great time. They had a tri tip dinner and brought in Tim Hawkins - comedian. He was hilarious. The theme was 70's so it was also quite funny to see our pastor go all in as Barry Gibb. And on New Year's Day we pooped around in our jammies!
Later in the weekend we enjoyed getting together with the Ness and Christie clan. A four generation friendship that started with our grandparents. The kids always enjoy getting together with this group because there are lots of kids! When you add ours there is always well over a dozen. So we got together and bowled and ate pizza (thanks for the place to be Sue!) and had Erin and Greggory over for the night.

This past week we have been relaxing and getting lots of things done around the house. Frank was back to work and back on the road so we took the opportunities to get the decorations down and put away. Nolan pruned roses for me, mended the fence, cleaned up the back yard, helped me with the tree, took down the outdoor lights, etc. Haley worked hard on all her make up homework and got her room shoveled out! We really got a lot accomplished. Tonight, I prepped 5 dinners so next week is all in the bag - or in the pot. We will be having.... Meatloaf, Stuffed Pork Chops, Cream of Mushroom Soup (homemade), Chicken and Dumplings (crock pot style), and Baked Sandwiches. There will be a few side dishes to make, but I feel quite relieved that the basic prep is done and washed up after! And I made an extra meatloaf to feed the freezer.

A Super Bowl Love Story

In late August 1996, I attended a bridal shower tea for my sister in law to be, Melanie Hull.  Her Aunt Shirley had created a beautiful party out on the back lawn, flowers and china and everyone in girly dresses. But most lovely of all was Melanie. I fell in love with her dress. It was my dream dress. Floral print. Georgette. Flowy. Bell/Cape Sleeve. Tea Length. Perfect Tea dress. I “pinned” it in my mind. That’s what we had to do back then. I knew that if I ever married – and hopefully that dashing Frank – that was the dress I wanted for my bridesmaids.  Furthermore… I had always hoped that if I could, I would provide the dresses for my bridesmaids. I had been in a couple of weddings and the expense was always difficult. It seemed like kind of a boobie prize to me. Hey, my dearest friends in the world, please be in my wedding so I can shove you over the precipice and into debt. Oh and make sure you check out my bridal registry! In January 1997, I was pretty h...

Weekend Treasure

Here are some stock photos of the love seat, chair and ottoman we purchased on Saturday at the auction.  These pictures don't really do the set justice.  But we have determined that the retail price for these now discontinued pieces was $1899.  We topped out our auction at $500.00, so after sales tax and the 15% auction fee, we did pretty well.. paying approximately 1/3 of retail. As an added bonus, they were sold to us as "durahide" which means fake.  Frank and I used to say that Nogahide should have been named NOTaHide.  But after looking them up, they are 60% leather.. the parts that don't matter -the back, are not.  BONUS!  They are now all safely home and put away... where you say?  Where could you possibly have put all these lovely pieces of furniture? Oh, I forgot to mention that they are for the cabin.  The hope is that mice will be thoroughly repelled by the very idea of gnawing on cowhide.  And besides that, they ...

The Fourth

The Fourth didn't feel much like the Fourth here in Hawaii.  We were very surprised!  New Years Eve is a huge time of fireworks all around the beaches and everywhere you go.  But the Fourth, not so much.  We could have gone to one of three large fireworks shows on the islands, but we didn't feel like fighting traffic and people.  We opted for a drive around the island to explore new sights and places.  We drove through Hale'iwa town and investigated some kayaking rental places for later in the week.  We headed on up the island and around to the Turtle Bay area.  Years ago, my folks were blessed to be able to use a condo over in this area and always came home talking about the shrimp trucks.  If you know, or knew my folks, you probably know they aren't really "taco truck" sort of people.  However, we stopped at fumi's and picked up 2 pounds of fresh uncooked shrimp.  Never frozen, people! Heads, tentacles, and eyeballs still i...
