Okay so I know I haven't finished posting about the Bahamas yet, but if I don't post about the PA trip while it's happening, it might never get done! We flew into Philadelphia on Saturday, our flight was delayed and we had all sorts of mishaps about the flight, in the end United credited us $150.  so that can be used for another adventure another time.  We picked up our extremely cheap rental car from Enterprise and were bumped up into a better car for free.  We drove ourselves down to see what all the hubbub was about.. Pats or Genos, ya know the famous Philly cheese steak competitors right across the street from each other.  We only made it to Pats.  The line wrapped around the building at 8:00 at night.  We shared two great options - one with whiz and one with provolone. 

We drove into the general area where Frank will be consulting on Tuesday.  I was able to book a really nice Courtyard Marriott with points in Reading.  It was half the points price of staying in Lancaster.  So I felt really lucky to get it, but even luckier when we walked into our room.  Beautiful! 

Today we drove into Stasberg and enjoyed a beautiful country drive and a country buffet at The Hershey Farm.  We weren't sure if there would be anything to do on a Sunday in Amish country, but one fun thing is that young Amish country do their courting by driving around in buggies on Sundays.  So we saw dozens of young happy couples enjoying rides in the buggies.  Some girls would stick their bare feet out the side to keep cool. 

We drove onto a wonderful toy train museum.  What a find for the toy train enthusiast - my husband.  We both really enjoyed looking out the earliest examples of toy and model train sets.

For our anniversary we purchased a beautiful bird feeder from Eldreth Pottery. 

We went to an open house in the Strasberg historic district.  We went to an open house for this little beauty.  There was a complete little "granny cottage" in the back - the realtor's words not mine!  Three stories complete with an unfinished basement.  The beautiful piece on this property was the barley twist front porch banister. Wrap around - a round wrap around mind you.  It needed a bit of work as it was built in the 1800s. When I told Nolan we found a place to buy in Strasberg, he laughed and said, I'm surprised you haven't found four by now!  The boy knows what his folks like to do.  Dream.

All in all a perfect, idyllic couple of days so far.  Tomorrow it's back to Amish area and maybe up to the Crayola factory before checking in, in the Allentown area.

Weekend Treasure

  Here are some stock photos of the love seat, chair and ottoman we purchased on Saturday at the auction.  These pictures don't really do the set justice.  But we have determined that the retail price for these now discontinued pieces was $1899.  We topped out our auction at $500.00, so after sales tax and the 15% auction fee, we did pretty well.. paying approximately 1/3 of retail. As an added bonus, they were sold to us as "durahide" which means fake.  Frank and I used to say that Nogahide should have been named NOTaHide.  But after looking them up, they are 60% leather.. the parts that don't matter -the back, are not.  BONUS!  They are now all safely home and put away... where you say?  Where could you possibly have put all these lovely pieces of furniture? Oh, I forgot to mention that they are for the cabin.  The hope is that mice will be thoroughly repelled by the very idea of gnawing on cowhide.  And besides that, they ...

The Fourth

The Fourth didn't feel much like the Fourth here in Hawaii.  We were very surprised!  New Years Eve is a huge time of fireworks all around the beaches and everywhere you go.  But the Fourth, not so much.  We could have gone to one of three large fireworks shows on the islands, but we didn't feel like fighting traffic and people.  We opted for a drive around the island to explore new sights and places.  We drove through Hale'iwa town and investigated some kayaking rental places for later in the week.  We headed on up the island and around to the Turtle Bay area.  Years ago, my folks were blessed to be able to use a condo over in this area and always came home talking about the shrimp trucks.  If you know, or knew my folks, you probably know they aren't really "taco truck" sort of people.  However, we stopped at fumi's and picked up 2 pounds of fresh uncooked shrimp.  Never frozen, people!
