Dirndl Done

So here is Haley in all of her district council finery. I made her redo her hair and put everything back on so I could take some pictures for "posterity"

This is how she wore her hair, although she had beautiful ribbons tied around the tops of the braids - she of course just now found them. Now that her hair is all pulled out again.
The vest front - I found wonderful traditional clasps at Joann's! This was nice as it eliminated the need to put button holes right in the front - always a risky proposition if you are as inept as putting in button holes as I am - although I did put in eight down the front of the little blouse. That was a first for me. I have found every conceivable way to avoid them up till now. Dirndl Done, new skill learned and practiced - check.


The pattern back was neatly cut to allow this sort of detailing in the back. Sorry about the wrinkles. We had almost all the materials on hand. The only things we purchased were the clasps, the Europeanie style trim around the waist and neck of the vest and a zipper for the skirt. Pretty good huh? The vest and skirt are made with some light green denim that I have miles of - I bought it to make some sort of a curtain for our outside overhang - Then the neighbors put in trees and it became less necessary.

Sorry a little out of focus. Oh yeah, another skill I attempted. I have never smocked anything before. Well the apron is always smocked with these outfits -so I thought I would attempt it. I could not have done it, except for the little tiny check in the background of the fabric. The consistency of the pattern allowed me to measure perfectly even stitches and then gather each row. I even went back and inserted beads. It was really fun hand work in front of the tv.


The back of the skirt - although she is wearing it a little skewed, shows a couple of the seams I had to put in to cinch in the waist.

Wow Heather! It looks great! It also looks like a LOT of work. What's your plans for it now...is it going to be Haley's halloween costume?

Oh Oh Oh my goodness, what a lot of work. I'm a Vogue pattern seamstress and I must say that that was a huge project and you are so good!!!! Can't imagine tearing out that waist! eeek.

Weekend Treasure

  Here are some stock photos of the love seat, chair and ottoman we purchased on Saturday at the auction.  These pictures don't really do the set justice.  But we have determined that the retail price for these now discontinued pieces was $1899.  We topped out our auction at $500.00, so after sales tax and the 15% auction fee, we did pretty well.. paying approximately 1/3 of retail. As an added bonus, they were sold to us as "durahide" which means fake.  Frank and I used to say that Nogahide should have been named NOTaHide.  But after looking them up, they are 60% leather.. the parts that don't matter -the back, are not.  BONUS!  They are now all safely home and put away... where you say?  Where could you possibly have put all these lovely pieces of furniture? Oh, I forgot to mention that they are for the cabin.  The hope is that mice will be thoroughly repelled by the very idea of gnawing on cowhide.  And besides that, they ...

The Fourth

The Fourth didn't feel much like the Fourth here in Hawaii.  We were very surprised!  New Years Eve is a huge time of fireworks all around the beaches and everywhere you go.  But the Fourth, not so much.  We could have gone to one of three large fireworks shows on the islands, but we didn't feel like fighting traffic and people.  We opted for a drive around the island to explore new sights and places.  We drove through Hale'iwa town and investigated some kayaking rental places for later in the week.  We headed on up the island and around to the Turtle Bay area.  Years ago, my folks were blessed to be able to use a condo over in this area and always came home talking about the shrimp trucks.  If you know, or knew my folks, you probably know they aren't really "taco truck" sort of people.  However, we stopped at fumi's and picked up 2 pounds of fresh uncooked shrimp.  Never frozen, people!
