Vacation part 1

Haley hard at work sewing another apron for a present!
Socks enjoying a "poochie cone" at Calici's Frozen Custard - YUM!
On Sunday our friends the Kauffmans drove up and joined us at Sequoia National Forest and then on to Hume Lake and back to the cabin for chili. Haley and Claire enjoyed the big trees!
On Tuesday, Dad and Beth joined us for the afternoon at the cabin. We drove up and had dinner at Hume Lake and sat out on the adirondacks by the lake. It was a perfect evening - the Sierras all refreshed from an afternoon rain. Here is Nolan and below the rest of us at a look out point on the way back to the cabin.

Well, it was a wonderful 5 days at the cabin. Frank and I took up our ginormous (just added to the dictionary this year) slide project. When we went to get started on it Sunday night, we realized that the bulb to our projector was burned out and the replacement bulb was not the right type! So Monday we took a jaunt down the hill into Fresno and had a nice afternoon anyway!

Oh, and let me back up! On Friday night we stayed with Dad and Beth. They gave us a wonderful dinner and a great place to lay our heads - albeit not for very long! We all had decided the night before to get up at the crack of dawn - 5:30am and hit the estate sales! Thank you Pam for the great tip about your neighborhood sale! We got a couple of cute pieces of depression glass there - at another sale we found a coo coo clock. Which, if we can get it to work was a drastic savings over buying one in Germany!!

So, anyway skip forward to Tuesday. Nolan and Frank were getting there boots on to get some timber out of the creek at the cabin and Nolan discovered that his long bothersome blister would no allow him to put on his shoes! It was infected and Frank again, tripped down the hill with Nolan to the doctor - he had to have it lanced and packed, etc. Poor guy!! When we took him back for a recheck on Wed they had to do the whole process over again. He looks a bit better today.

Last night we dined again with Dad and Beth, Todd and Melanie and the girls were also there so we had a good time catching up. We went on to drop by at Faith and Esther's to drop off cabin keys and had a great time catching up with them.

Upon arriving home last night, very late, we discovered that the city had come by and decided one of our beautiful trees was leaning over too far for their liking and they chopped it down. Spotted, Decided and cut all in one day! The sad truth is that if the tree had been pruned in a timely manner - the city's job which they will cite you for if you do yourself- the tree would not have leaned in the first place! So much for 10 years of growth! The disgusting thing is, the trees they chose have a very ugly youth and the tree was just beginning to really be beautiful! The other annoyance is that the tree was right in front of our eastern windows and we had just planted several shade loving plants in it's shadow!!! AAAHHH.

Ah well, over to the bay area tonight for a nice long weeknd.
Hugs.

A Super Bowl Love Story

In late August 1996, I attended a bridal shower tea for my sister in law to be, Melanie Hull.  Her Aunt Shirley had created a beautiful party out on the back lawn, flowers and china and everyone in girly dresses. But most lovely of all was Melanie. I fell in love with her dress. It was my dream dress. Floral print. Georgette. Flowy. Bell/Cape Sleeve. Tea Length. Perfect Tea dress. I “pinned” it in my mind. That’s what we had to do back then. I knew that if I ever married – and hopefully that dashing Frank – that was the dress I wanted for my bridesmaids.  Furthermore… I had always hoped that if I could, I would provide the dresses for my bridesmaids. I had been in a couple of weddings and the expense was always difficult. It seemed like kind of a boobie prize to me. Hey, my dearest friends in the world, please be in my wedding so I can shove you over the precipice and into debt. Oh and make sure you check out my bridal registry! In January 1997, I was pretty h...

Weekend Treasure

Here are some stock photos of the love seat, chair and ottoman we purchased on Saturday at the auction.  These pictures don't really do the set justice.  But we have determined that the retail price for these now discontinued pieces was $1899.  We topped out our auction at $500.00, so after sales tax and the 15% auction fee, we did pretty well.. paying approximately 1/3 of retail. As an added bonus, they were sold to us as "durahide" which means fake.  Frank and I used to say that Nogahide should have been named NOTaHide.  But after looking them up, they are 60% leather.. the parts that don't matter -the back, are not.  BONUS!  They are now all safely home and put away... where you say?  Where could you possibly have put all these lovely pieces of furniture? Oh, I forgot to mention that they are for the cabin.  The hope is that mice will be thoroughly repelled by the very idea of gnawing on cowhide.  And besides that, they ...

The Fourth

The Fourth didn't feel much like the Fourth here in Hawaii.  We were very surprised!  New Years Eve is a huge time of fireworks all around the beaches and everywhere you go.  But the Fourth, not so much.  We could have gone to one of three large fireworks shows on the islands, but we didn't feel like fighting traffic and people.  We opted for a drive around the island to explore new sights and places.  We drove through Hale'iwa town and investigated some kayaking rental places for later in the week.  We headed on up the island and around to the Turtle Bay area.  Years ago, my folks were blessed to be able to use a condo over in this area and always came home talking about the shrimp trucks.  If you know, or knew my folks, you probably know they aren't really "taco truck" sort of people.  However, we stopped at fumi's and picked up 2 pounds of fresh uncooked shrimp.  Never frozen, people! Heads, tentacles, and eyeballs still i...
